As wireless phones gain prominence in the marketplace, marketers have flooded the common consumer's mailbox with literally hundreds of cell phone deals. Types of calling plans. Most cell phone deals offer three types of calling plans: local, regional, and national. There would generally be a calling area a.k.a. "home area" where you could make/receive calls using the bundle of minutes and not be charged long distance fees. Calls outside this area may cost money -- either a per-minute charge or roaming charges. Local plans cover the smallest calling area; regional plans, generally cover several states; whereas, national plans would cover the largest area available in the carrier's network.

Bundle of minutes. Cell phone deals are sweetened in a package: "bundled minutes." You would be offered a certain number of minutes every month for a flat monthly fee and beyond that bundle, your usage would be charged on a per minute basis. Some carriers, in addition to the bundle, also provide an additional bundle of minutes for nights and weekends. The "night minutes," however, on these cell phone deals are only available after a certain time of the day and is generally available until a certain time the next morning. Read your plan's fine print to understand these terms.

Roaming fees. If you make a call from a location where your carrier does not have it's own network, you may incur roaming charges -- in addition to long distance charges and other fees. Most carriers would provide you with a "coverage map," detailing the exact coverage area.
Compare cell phone deals. Your best bet would be to compare multiple cell phone deals before arriving at a conclusion. In addition to price, you must also ask family and friends for their experiences with different carriers.
