{"id":311,"date":"2013-03-14T20:49:02","date_gmt":"2013-03-14T20:49:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dontspendmore.com\/blog\/?p=311"},"modified":"2013-03-14T23:01:46","modified_gmt":"2013-03-14T23:01:46","slug":"cashback-comparison-earn-money-shopping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.dontspendmore.com\/blog\/index.php\/cashback-comparison-earn-money-shopping\/","title":{"rendered":"Cashback Comparison: Earn Money Shopping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Matt<\/p>\n<p>With the abundance of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dontspendmore.com\/creditcards.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">credit cards<\/a> available, and the endless variety of rewards programs associated with them, it makes sense to do some comparison shopping before deciding on your next credit card.\u00a0 In the last decade, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dontspendmore.com\/cash_back_credit_cards.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">cashback credit cards<\/a> have become a popular alternative to the standard flight reward programs offered by credit card issuers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is a cashback credit card?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cashback credit cards use a formula &#8212; usually a percentage of the amount of money you spend with the card &#8212; to calculate a cash reward payable to the cardholder.\u00a0 Typically, one percent of the value of all purchases will be redeemed to the consumer.\u00a0 In reality the formula usually isn\u2019t really that simple.\u00a0 Many cards offer a premium; say five percent, on purchases at certain types of stores, like supermarkets or drug stores.\u00a0 With some credit cards you must shop at specific brand stores in order to be eligible for the cash incentive.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dontspendmore.com\/cash_back_credit_cards.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to compare cashback credit cards<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s the catch?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Good question. The answer: there really is no catch.\u00a0 As long as you pay your statement balance in full each month you will benefit by receiving cash back on the purchases you make with your card.\u00a0 But that doesn\u2019t mean there aren\u2019t restrictions and other provisions make reading the fine print worth the time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Caps and accumulation thresholds<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some cashback cards cap the amount of cash rewards that can be accumulated in a year.\u00a0 If your card has a $400 cap, you will not accumulate any more rewards once you have reached the limit.\u00a0 Many cards also have a minimum accumulation threshold before the reward can be redeemed. For example, you might have to accumulate at least $100 in rewards before you can cash in.\u00a0 Finally, some cards have a graduated reward formula, where the cardholder might earn 0.25 percent on the first $1,000 spent, 0.50 percent on the next $1,000 and only reaching one percent cash back on money spent in excess of $2,000.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Three incentives that make cashback cards stand out<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Sign up bonuses \u2013<\/strong> Does the card offer a sign up bonus?\u00a0 If not you might want to keep looking.\u00a0 In order to get their card in your wallet, many credit card providers are offering bonuses.\u00a0 Anywhere from a $25 gift card to $150 cash is currently being offered.<\/li>\n<li><strong>0% APR \u2013<\/strong> If you\u2019re carrying a balance on your current credit card you\u2019d probably like to have the interest rate lowered.\u00a0 Look for a credit card that lets you transfer your balance and cuts the rate on the transferred portion.
